3 Ways to Look for Bed Bugs Hiding in Your Home

Maybe you've got a friend with a bed bug control problem, or perhaps you've heard of bed bug infestations on the news. Checking for bed bugs in your Lexington area home or your hotel rooms is an excellent way to prevent a problem, just in case.

First, we'll talk about the biggest misconceptions surrounding a bed bug infestation and dispel common fears people face when confronted with an outbreak. Then we will discuss the primary list of things bed bugs leave behind, where to look when performing your inspection in your Lexington home, and more.

What You Should Know

The Harm of Bed Bug Bites | Although many people experience extreme anxiety because of bed bugs, mosquitoes are much more likely to be dangerous. The most danger that a bed bug can cause is an allergic reaction, but most don't react at all. That doesn't mean the terror isn't justified, but keep in mind that even household spiders are more likely than bed bugs to create dangerous situations.

Mistakes Identifying a Bed Bug Problem | Sometimes bed bugs are mistaken for other insects, or vice versa, like tiny cockroaches, carpet beetles, or even ticks. Make sure you know exactly what you're dealing with before you jump to a conclusion and start treating, especially if you're just going off of bed bug bites.

Do Lights Keep Them Away? | Because bed bugs disappeared during the last half of the previous century, many people, including some pest control companies, have no idea what works to keep these bugs away and what doesn't.

For example, some people have thought that keeping the lights on while they sleep will keep the bugs away because they're nocturnal. But this isn't the case because if bed bugs need to feed, they'll find a host with the lights on, or even during the day if they must. Ignore hysterical hearsay, and turn off your lights for a good night's rest!

When they have not fed recently, these bugs are flat, oval-shaped, with a reddish-brown color and ribbed abdomens. They have six legs and two antennae and don't grow any bigger than ¼ inch long. After a feeding session, their color changes to a redder color, and their abdomen swells up like a balloon.

Signs of Bed bugs to Look For

Look for these signs of bed bugs when you perform an inspection (see below for instructions on where to look).

1. Eggs and Discarded Molts

You might find whitish or off-white eggs or eggshells in areas where bed bugs generally wait for a blood meal (again, see below for details). Eggs are about 1 mm long, or about 1/25 of an inch, and females can lay 1-3 eggs each day in the right conditions.

You're much more likely to find molts from growing bed bugs, which often look like crumbs. Nymphs shed their exoskeleton five times before they reach adulthood, so their favorite hiding places are likely to be covered with them.

2. Bug Waste

Bed bug waste is about the size, shape, and color of the period at the end of this sentence, though probably a little larger. Some describe them as dots of black pepper.

Some insects have similar fecal matter and also molt, like German cockroaches. Either way, if you find evidence such as this, you're looking at an infestation of some kind.

3. Bloodstains

Because bed bugs feed on humans, you may see dark spots of blood where they have fed. Although it's disgusting information, it can be useful to know that bed bugs void their last blood meal during one of every five feedings, which leaves stains on the bedsheets.

Remember, bites are not a good diagnostic tool by themselves since they could be from almost any insect, but they are a good indicator of some sort of pest activity. Just because the bites were delivered while you were asleep in bed does not mean they're from bed bugs.

Where to Find Bed Bugs

The most common bed bug hiding spots are anywhere they can hide between feedings. This is usually as close as possible to where you sleep, including the cracks and crevices in your bed frame. Check the seams in the mattresses and box springs for the above signs of bed bugs, and pull back the covers and sheets to make sure.

Other common places can be a closet, the corner between walls, between the wall and ceiling, or between the wall and floor, along baseboards, under or around carpets, in curtain folds, in drawers and drawer runners.

Again, before you sleep in any new location, like a hotel room or other location, inspect for bed bugs before you sleep there and even before you put your luggage in the room. If you suspect a bed bug infestation in your hotel room, ask for a different room or leave the hotel altogether. At home, talk to a pest control company right away if you suspect bed bugs.

We had a wonderful experience with our technician. Weston was easy to talk to and explained everything well. Josh, who sold us the service, was very kind also. Not pushy at all. And very informative. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in the future.
